Sorry for the lack of updates recently…it’s really difficult to write anything meaningful when you don’t have a laptop and the use of computers and/or internet is almost prohibitively expensive ($3/hr. definitely adds up). I will try to write a story or two in the coming weeks though. Speaking of which, I will be spending Christmas at a backpacker (hostel) in Nelson called Paradisio that’s supposedly known for its Christmas parties. And then for New Year’s, I will hopefully make it to the Rhythm & Vines music festival on the North Island, which is supposedly the popular thing to do. After a quick trip up the North Island, I fly out of Auckland direct to Buenos Aires on the 3rd to start my 3-month overland tour of South America!

Just arrived in Bangkok…cool city with tons of young people, lots of foreigners, interesting shopping, and way too much water (I am heading to Chiang Mai in the north just in time to escape the flooding). I’ll spend the next month here in Thailand (likely skipping Ankor Wat and Loas unfortunately). I will be offline for most of the month, so don’t expect any updates for a while! I did get around to posting my photos of the Annapurna Sanctuary trek on flickr though…check them out.

It’s something I’ve been wanting to see my entire life: the biggest mountains on Earth. I arrived in Kathmandu from Chengdu (via Lhasa) two days ago. We actually flew just to the east of Mt. Everest, but I was unfortunately on the wrong side of the airplane. I did see some other pretty incredible peaks anyway though (that were almost as high as the plane was flying). The Kathmandu Valley (one big, sprawling mass of houses and people) is amazing in many ways…so much more character than most of China. I’m excited to spend a few more days there before my flight to Bangkok on the 19th.

Right now, I am in Pokhara, which has to be one of the adventure capitals of the entire region…there are so many Westerners here! The energy is awesome though. Tomorrow I will start the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek which will take me up to Annapurna Base Camp and back, over roughly 9 days. I’m excited to see one of the world’s highest peaks (>8,000m) up close. I will update when I return…for now, check out some photos I’ve finally uploaded to flickr.
